Ministry Protégés

CMP offers a mentoring program that is called the Ministry Protégé Program. The word protégé is defined as a person under the patronage, care and/or protection of someone interested in his or her career or welfare. As mentors for those entering ministry, students are developed beyond the academic and have professional and lifestyle mentoring.

Philosophy of Mentoring

"Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave - just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Matt. 20:26b-28 (NIV)

With these words, Jesus redirected the apostles' understanding of leadership and greatness. He reaffirmed that they could be leaders, but it would mean taking the way of sacrifice and service if they were to lead the same way He led.

This radical understanding of leadership is at the heart of the Center for Ministry Preparation’s Ministry Protégé Program. Students are expected to learn about servant-leadership through experience and study. Just as Jesus developed servant hearts in His followers, it is the mentoring aspect that assists students in their growth and understanding of ministry.

The Center’s mentoring dynamic is designed to involve students in supervised Christian service activities on a consistent basis. These activities may include a broad range of experiences.

Through involvement in the Ministry Protégé program, a student will discover greater clarification and confirmation of his/her vocational plans. Therefore, during the student's first and second year, ministry activities should correlate more closely with his/her vocational and life goals.

Ministry Protégé Guidelines

The Ministry Protégé Program provides college level study and practical ministry experiences. Daily mentoring for lifestyle and attitudinal perimeters are necessary to develop professionalism, character, and Christ-likeness.

The following are guidelines of attitude and conduct for the Ministry Protégé Program.

  1. Be someone others want to follow: “Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 11:1
  2. Let your life be your message: “We live by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:4
  3. Godly leaders are humble servants.
  4. Spiritual leaders are self-motivated and consistent: live by good decisions not emotional feelings.
  5. Maintain a teachable Spirit so that you can be formed by God.
  6. Remember attitudes are a choice: have a positive attitude and encourage others. The development of Christian character is vital to being a healthy leader.
  7. Leaders understand the value of faithfulness and endurance: developing the fruit of the Spirit is an important part of leadership.
  8. Mature spiritual leaders are peacemakers: “Let us make every effort to do what leads to peace and mutual edification.” Romans 14:19
  9. Develop the ability to be a part of a team. Pride fuels the need to be a superstar! Do not have an independent spirit or sense of isolation.
  10. A mature leader continues to submit to godly authority and strives to improve their personal character and integrity.
  11. Communication is vital to effective leadership. Communicating feelings, thoughts, and desires is important to relationship building, accountability, spiritual development, and effective ministry.
  12. Curfew: During weekdays 11:00 p.m. and weekends (Fridays – Sundays) 12:00 a.m. (unless working).
  13. Church dress: business casual. No jeans or shorts.
  14. Household chores: clean bedrooms, kitchen and bathrooms daily.
  15. Punctuality: be on time for all activities, meetings and curfew.
  16. Phone calls: limit phone calls to the opposite sex to ten minutes.
  17. Transportation: no riding in cars alone with the opposite sex.
  18. Internet: No viewing of inappropriate sites that are questionable to your Christian integrity. No continual instant messaging a member of the opposite sex or emailing back and forth.

Ministry Protégé No Dating Guideline

The purpose of these guidelines is to protect and strengthen your discipleship relationship with the Lord. Strict observance of these guidelines is necessary for the benefits of the Ministry Protégé. Godly male/female relationships are encouraged however dating is not permitted for first year students. “Dating” is construed whenever a male and a female demonstrate by word or action that a special couple relationship exists. These guidelines apply even if one of the parties is not a part of the Center for Ministry Preparation. For those students who enter the MP program already in a committed relationship, special guidelines will be established. However, it is encouraged that a sabbatical from the “dating” relationship be taken for the first year for the purpose of sole attention upon the Ministry Protégé’s relationship with Jesus Christ.

Ministry Protégé Dress Guideline

The dress guidelines are simple: “Remember that you are a minister representing Jesus Christ.” Dress neatly and tastefully. The following guidelines are provided:

Ministry Protégé Apartment Living Guideline

Living in an apartment provides an excellent opportunity for building relationships and molding character. More than anywhere else, a sense of community is built in the apartments. Within that community each student is expected to exercise care and respect toward the apartment and roommates. This is your home during the school year. With everyone cooperating, the apartment will be a pleasant place to live.

Residence Hours:

MONDAY - THURSDAY 12:00 a.m. Doors locked

FRIDAY - SUNDAY 1:00 a.m. Doors locked

Students are expected to be in their apartments before closing hours unless working, participating in a CMP event or approved ministry sponsored activity, or signed out for a late night. Students who break curfew and those who accompany or assist them will be subject to fines and/or disciplinary action.

Late Nights

Curfews should be met consistently. If a curfew will not be met for some unforeseen reason students must have the permission of the Student Development Director to take a late night.

Opposite Sex Visitation

Men and women may not visit the apartment of a single person of the opposite sex without prior approval from the Student Development Director.

Visitor Stay

Guests of students wishing to spend the night in apartment must have prior written permission of the CMP office. No guest may stay in apartments without this permission. Fines and disciplinary action may be taken when there is failure to abide by CMP standards.

Overnights Out of Town

Students who plan on spending the night out of town must inform the Student Development Director and provide information in case parents should call.

Personal Possessions

It would be naive to think that CMP and community are immune to theft and dishonesty. Therefore, all students should keep their rooms locked and valuables put away. The Center for Ministry Preparation is not responsible for loss or damage of any student's personal possessions. Please take proper precautions.

Courtesy

Our Christian character and common courtesy demand that we conduct ourselves in a way that shows respect towards all students, faculty, staff, hosts, and others. This includes the volume of stereos and televisions, general voice volume, respecting others privacy, entering anyone else's room without permission, and pranking. Individuals who refuse to live within these bounds will be subject to discipline.

Quiet Hours

Quiet hours in each apartment will be determined by the CMP office or the apartment complex. During those hours, stereos, radios, etc. will be kept at minimum levels or used with headphones. In addition, apartments and/or courtyard noise must be kept to a minimum.
